Conflict Facilitation Training
Many discussions around diversity issues are bound to have communication issues and potential for some form of conflict or misunderstanding. The Buddhists say that conflict is both an opportunity and a sign of danger. At StirFry Seminars, we call it a “dangerous opportunity”! In our experience, conflicts are often opportunities for growth and deeper understandings to take place. In this very dynamic and exciting seminar we will explore a myriad of techniques to more effectively mediate diversity conflicts and misunderstandings.
We will use Lee Mun Wah’s book The Art of Mindful Facilitation and various other communication techniques that will help to de-escalate a conflict within minutes. Through the use of role plays, personal stories, films, listening exercises, and ‘mindfully responding’ techniques, participants will learn facilitation and inquiry techniques normally reserved for intermediate/advanced trainers.
- Participants will learn the following:
- How to de-escalate a conflict with minutes
- Observing the intent and impact inherent in all communications
- The importance of a Conflict History Assessment
- The Art of Listening & Responding
- Ways to mindfully observe what is being said and what is not
- Nine Healthy Ways to Communicate
The Intersection of Mindful Facilitation & Group Process
So many times, much of our education as therapists has lacked adequate training from a diversity perspective and lens. Partly because therapists have received ‘awareness training’ but almost no ‘practical skills training’ in dealing with diversity-related issues or confrontations when working with groups from diverse populations. In this training we will demonstrate the myriad of ways that facilitation, when practiced using Mindful Techniques, developed by Lee Mun Wah, can become a useful tool in helping counseling students, faculty and staff to become culturally competent and skilled in facilitating and processing individual and group issues from a diversity and therapeutic lens.
Through the use of filmed vignettes, role plays and personal stories, participants will learn:
- Mindful Listening and Responsive Techniques
- The Art of Mindful Facilitation
- How to De-escalate a Conflict Within Seconds
- Unveiling the Roots of Our Disconnections and How to Reconnect
- Noticing What Is Missing
- How to Create a Sense of Community & Belonging Amongst Diverse Groups
- 21 Ways That Stop A Diversity Conversation
- Advanced Empathetic Interventions
Let’s Get Real: Unlearning Racism & Internalized Racism
Before we can truly become a multicultural nation, we must have a relationship based on respect and understanding, reflection and curiosity; where our differences and our similarities are embraced, valued and integrated into the very fabric of our workplaces, communities, schools and governmental institutions. It also means coming to an understanding that awareness and holidays are just the beginning.
What is required is an on-going dialogue and relationship with each other. I hope that you will join us in making this not only a better world for our children, but for ourselves – not by starting tomorrow, but by beginning that conversation today.
Participants will learn:
- 9 Healthy Ways to Communicate
- 101 Ways to Become Culturally Competent
- 21 Statements That Stop A Diversity Conversation
- The Art of Listening & Responding Cross-Culturally
Let’s Get Real- Unlearning Racism & Internalized Racism
There is so much that is unsaid in this country about race issues. In this retreat we will explore a variety of ways to have this dialogue on race and racism that will lead to a more intimate and honest conversation and relationship with each other. This retreat is about confronting some of the issues that keep us all from talking to one another about race/racism. It is also about discovering new ways to begin that conversation, how to create a bridge to talk about our differences, exploring what opens us up and what closes us down, and finally, 101 ways to become Culturally Competent in our relationships and workplaces.
